1 dead in rollover crash on Florida's Turnpike

Turnpike closed near Kenansville for hours

KENANSVILLE, Fla. – At least one person died and 5 were injured in a rollover crash on Florida's Turnpike near Kenansville, troopers said.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 195 and State Road 60. FHP said a 1999 Ford Explorer SUV was driving northbound with six occupants when it had a tire failure, causing the driver to lose control and overturn the car on the median and southbound lanes.

Troopers said four of the six occupants were ejected as the SUV rolled and one died on the scene. The five others, Andy Martinez, 24; Arturo Martinez, 14; Angelica Martinez, 22; Ashley Fowler, 22 and Hilda Insante, 10, were airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center and Arnold Palmer Hospital and are in serious condition. They weren't wearing seatbelts, according to the report.

Officials closed the southbound lanes of the roadway but reopened them at around 1 p.m. Monday.

Details about the crash were not immediately known.
