Just like people, dogs need to watch their portion sizes to maintain a healthy weight and lower their risk for diabetes, cancer and liver disease.

According to dog expert Cesar Millan, pet owners should measure how much food their dog is eating. Millan recommends using a measuring cup to ensure you are feeding your dog the correct portion sizes.

Millan also recommends keeping track of how many treats your dog eats each day. Treats count as part of your dog’s daily food allowance, so they should be counted towards his or her overall calories for the day.

Millan suggests to look at the ingredients in your dog’s treats. Take a look at how much salt and fat are in them, and make sure they comply with your dog’s dietary needs.
