WASHINGTON D.C. -

A Kissimmee Gateway Airport control tower has been spared from closing after a Florida congressman fought the decision to shut it down due to sequestration cuts.

Congressman Alan Grayson spoke to Federal Aviation Administration officials, airport executives and the White House administration in an effort to save the tower.

"This facility will continue to serve the Greater Orlando area, 125 airport employees will keep their jobs, and Central Floridians can rest assured that their airspace is safe and secure," Grayson said.

Earlier in March, the FAA released a list of nearly 200 airport facilities that would be closed. The Associated Press reported on Friday that the FAA will close 149 control towers around the country.
