AUBURNDALE, Fla. -

Two 10-year-old girls were killed in a crash after the car they were riding in collided with a truck that apparently ran a red light.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened Sunday night.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports that Linda Hood Mercer was driving a Volkswagen Beetle when her car entered an intersection and was struck by a pickup truck.

There were four girls in Mercer's car. The two 10-year-olds were not wearing seat belts and were killed. A third girl, who also did not wear a seat belt, is in a Tampa hospital with critical injuries. The fourth girl was in the passenger seat and wore her seat belt. She wasn't injured.

The Sheriff's Office says charges are pending.
