Volusia County Fire Rescue is investigating a possible drowning in Daytona Beach on Monday afternoon.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -

A 2-year-old drowned Monday in a pond behind a Daytona Beach home, according to Volusia County Fire Rescue.

Officials said neighbors reported they saw 2-year-old Clayton Brown playing outside of a home on Aleatha Drive with his 4-year-old brother, throwing toys in the pond just before 1 p.m.

Mother Talisa Brown walked outside, found Clayton in the pond and yelled for help because she couldn't swim, officials said.

Fire Rescue says a neighbor jumped into the water, got the child out and started performing CPR.

"I just kinda dove in. I didn't know if it was him or what it was," said neighbor Rhonda Moore. "I was in disbelief. So I grabbed him and pulled him in and got him to the bank and started CPR."

Police said the mother, who Moore later consoled on the bank of the pond, is mentally disabled, so the grandmother has legal custody. Officials said that the grandmother was also taking care of the children but left to run some errands.

The incident is under investigation.
