90-year-old Palm Bay crossing guard retires after 25 years
A 90-year-old school crossing guard and former U.S. Marine will retire Friday after 25 years of escorting pedestrians.
Fred Blackman is “Palm Bay’s original crossing guard,” according to Police Chief Doug Muldoon.
Blackman helped start the school crossing guard program and provided training for those who joined, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
“When he arrived, three of us manned one intersection,” Muldoon said in a news release. “He took over and grew the program to more than 30 crossing guard across the city. He has been a great asset and we will miss him.”
“When I came down here to retire, I got lazy and was looking for something to do,” Blackman said. “I loved being a crossing guard and helping educate our children. They are our future.”
