SANFORD, Fla. -

A bear was euthanized Tuesday night after being struck by a car in Sanford.

The crash happened on State Road 46 near Henderson Lane, just west of Interstate 4.

Seminole County deputies responded to the accident and discovered that the bear was seriously injured and needed to be put down.  The driver suffered injuries but was expected to be OK.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials were called to the scene to remove the bear from the side of the road.

Wildlife officials say vehicle collisions are responsible for about 90 percent of bear deaths in Florida.

Officials urged drivers to be extremely cautious, especially at night when bears search for food.
