FROSTPROOF, Fla. -

A 10-year-old Polk County boy who was shot in the head at close range has died, according to his family.

Skyler Richardson died about a week after being airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa following the shooting, which occurred March 13 at a home on Otto Polk Road in Frostproof.

His family released a statement, saying Skyler "was called home."

"Our Sweet Skyler Was Called Home To Be With Jesus A Few Hours Ago. We Will Miss You So Much Baby But We Know That You Are In A Boat Fishing With Papaw And Hanging Out With Big Poppy Looking Down On Us And Watching Over Us. We Are Going To Miss You So Much And Our Lives Will Never Be The Same Without You Here. We Are So Thankful To Have You For The Time We Did Have With You. You Have Helped Us All To Come Together As A Family And As A Community. We Love You With All Of Our Hearts Our Sweet Sky Boy."

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Skyler and his 13-year-old brother were shooting targets outside the home with their BB rifles while their mother prepared dinner.

Deputies said as the boys were playing, the older brother pointed his gun at Skyler and the 10-year-old was struck in the head at close range.

The older brother alerted his mother, and authorities were called, deputies said.

The shooting appeared to be accidental, according to the Sheriff's Office.
