NASCAR fans started showing up early for Sunday's race, but some arrived two weeks early.

Fans said grilling is their fuel, a motorcycle and RV is their ride, and all of it is a sport, tailgating.

"I'm a big race fan and this is the Super Bowl of racing and I want to be a part of it," Paul Laribee of Jacksonville told Local 6.

For Paul and his family, they came from north Florida two weeks ago.

"I go back to work for a couple of days because I am in Jacksonville," said Laribee.

Just across the lot, Rick Parrish, got to a spot to watch the great american race weeks ago too.

"We love racing," said Parrish. "We go to about 7 races a year and we enjoy racing."

The fans have been camping out for not only days, but have made a tradition for years.

For NASCAR fan David Robinson, a little rain won't keep him away.  He came all the way from Ohio.

"It's our home away from home during the winter," said Robinson. "We enjoy coming down to Daytona for a week and getting out of the snow."

Folks say that while Saturday's crash had some people edgy, Sunday, it was all about the big race.

"Nobody's going to think about that, it's racing," said Brian Wisneski from Pennsylvania. "Accidents, happen. They happen on the highway everyday."

Fans say it's not just about the racing, but being there has allowed them to make lifelong friends and, of course, those lifetime memories.
