LAKE WALES, Fla. -

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section confirmed Tuesday the first positive Rabies case in Polk County for the year.

On Jan. 18, a bat was impounded by PCSO Animal Control from 355 1st Avenue North in Lake Wales.

The homeowner saw his three dogs sniffing around an injured bat just outside the house.

The bat's carcass was sent for testing and was confirmed positive for rabies by the state laboratory.

Animal control reminded residents that bats and raccoons are among the mammals considered to be high risk species or “rabies vector species” (RVS), and said not to approach any animal which is acting in an unusual or suspicious manner.
