Fla. house approves bill restricting massage parlor hours

Florida's massage parlors would shut down at midnight and face other scrutiny under a bill that breezed through a state House panel.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Dave Kerner would require the parlors to close from midnight to 5 a.m. The Lake Worth Democrat says no legitimate parlor is giving massages at 3 a.m.

The measure (HB 7005) was approved by the House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee on Thursday.

Kerner says police agencies report that some parlors are fronts for sex-trafficking operations where the women employees are confined to squalid conditions at the parlors.

Parlor owners could face criminal charges if their employees are forced to live in the parlors.

The bill also seeks to regulate advertising by the parlors and would require parlor owners to have government IDs.
