A golfer got the surprise of his life on the 14th hole when instead of sinking a putt he sunk into the ground.

Mark Mihal was playing at the Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill., last week when a sinkhole suddenly opened underneath him and he fell below the ground, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Mihal's golfing buddies called for help, and the pro shop's manager came out with a ladder and a rope. It took about 20 minutes to get Mihal back above ground.

Mihal ended up unscathed except for a dislocated shoulder. And while he told the Post-Dispatch Annbriar is one of his favorite courses, it's unlikely he'll be playing there anytime soon.

“It would be strange playing that hole again, for sure,” Mihal told the Post-Dispatch.
