CLERMONT, Fla. -

A suspicious letter at the Lake County jail on Friday prompted a hazardous materials investigation, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Authorities said an inmate was trying to send a package out of state and jail officials were checking mail as protocol and detected a powdery substance.

The letter was sent to the Lake County Corrections Institute on Highway 27 in Clermont. Initial testing at the basic local level determined it to be a suspicious substance and authorities are doing further testing to see if it's harmful or not.

No other information was immediately available.
