A statue of St. Michael was beheaded at a Central Florida church by a woman with an aluminum baseball bat, police say.

A homeless woman used an aluminum baseball bat to behead a statue inside a Lake County church because, according to police, she was trying to "fight the devil."

Elizabeth Travis was arrested Wednesday on felony criminal mischief charges after the incident, which occurred at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Lady Lake.

According to Lady Lake police, church officials heard loud banging noises coming from the Last Supper Adoration Chapel and discovered Travis striking a statue of St. Michael with a bat.

Travis ran away, but a church worker followed her until officers took her into custody, police said.

Lady Lake police said Travis had been hanging around the church for several hours before she vandalized the statue.

Travis told officers that she thought she was doing a good thing, according to police.

"I go to church, believe in God, read my Bible," she told Local 6.
