Marion residents evacuated because of brush fire

Firefighters continue to battle a nearly 2,000-acre brush fire that destroyed 10 homes in Marion County.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -

Marion County firefighters, along with the U.S. Division of Forestry was working a 300 acre brush fire near Lake George Saturday.

Firefighters said they were battling a 300-acre brush fire located within Hopkins Prairie section of the Ocala National Forest south of Salt Springs.

Firefighteres said approximately 15 homes were in danger at the fire’s outbreak and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in evacuating residents along Highway 19 from Forest Road 54 to Forest Road 33.

Firefighters said low humidity and high winds made the Hopkins Prairie fire fast moving and unpredictable.
