An online petition to stop the sale of sexist Disney's Avengers t-shirts gained 6,000 signatures.

The petition, created on, still needs to receive 1, 617 more signatures before it will be sent to Disney executives. Its aims to stop the sale of recent Avenger t shirt read "Be a Hero" for boys and "I Need a Hero" for girls, the Huffington Post reports.

Those behind the petition see the shirts as spreading the message that girls can't be heroes and need boys to save them.

"We believe that women can be heroes too, and as one of the most recognizable children's brands in the world," the petition states. "It's especially important that Disney takes responsibility for the messages they deliver to our youngest and most vulnerable."
