ORLANDO, Fla. -

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Orange County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention deputies and volunteers are launching Operation Candy Cane, a public awareness campaign aimed at thwarting auto burglaries at popular retail center parking lots.

Deputies will be alerting citizens whose vehicles are at risk for a burglary by placing an informational survey on their vehicle.

Deputies want citizens to take their valuables out of plain sight to avoid crimes of opportunity.

A short note will outline their vulnerabilities and let citizens know how their car is considered a target for criminals.

Deputies will be patrolling parking lots at Florida Mall, Waterford Lakes Town Center and Orlando Premium Outlets. The Orange County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention trailer will alternate between the 3 locations.

Operation Candy Cane will last through January 7th.
