Single moms in Osceola County are getting a helping hand from the members of a church organization that specifically creates events designed to help these women.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -

Single mothers make up anywhere from six to 14 percent of the parenting population in towns across Central Florida, according to the 2010 Census.

In Osceola County, there are nearly 10,000 women head of households with children under 18 years old at home.

Now those women have a specific support network through City of Life Church.

"It was a cause the was near to our hearts and we saw a need in our community to bless these single moms," said Pastor Amy Smith, who spearheaded the church's single mom's ministry three years ago.

Prism, which stands for promoting restoration in single moms, is a women's ministry that holds events targeted towards single mothers throughout the year.

Smith said the group has successfully held backpack giveaways, spa days, Thanksgiving food events and even car care service days for single moms.

"Personally understanding the pressures and the stress that can come from raising a family on your own, its a personal desire to reach out to single moms," said Smith, who was raised by a single mother.

Currently, Prism is collecting new and gently used clothing and accessories for a fashion expo event. Members of the community can bring donations to the church anytime between now and the end of March.

During the event in April, single moms will meet with stylist and beauty consultants to get a head to toe makeover and hopefully walk away with at least one new item in their wardrobe.

"Single moms always put their kids first, so this should be a chance for them to be loved on and feel special," said Smith.

Childcare will also be provided at the April 13 event.

Single moms interested in attending need to sign up online beforehand at City of Life's website.  Anyone wishing to donate clothing or volunteer can also find information online.
