SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. -

A bomb squad is investigating a small homemade explosive that was dropped off at the Satellite Beach Police Department.

Police Lt. Bert Berrios said a person took the device to the police station around 1 p.m. Wednesday after running over it with a lawnmower at a nearby baseball field.

Berrios said it was "no bigger than a firecracker," about 4 inches long.

Police remind residents that if they find suspicious items, they should call 911.

"If they do find something that's suspicious, people should not pick it up," Berrios told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.  "Just give us a call and let us take care of it."

Streets near the police department, including Cinnamon Avenue and Thyme Street, were closed.
