A child has been hospitalized after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while playing near a Seminole County church, authorities say.

LAKE MARY, Fla. -

A child was bitten by a rattlesnake on Friday while playing behind a Seminole County church, where his brother attends school, according to officials.

Police said the boy, believed to be 4 or 5 years old, was looking for frogs in a wooded area near Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lake Mary when he was bitten on the hand by a 10-inch pygmy rattlesnake.

"He reached down and was bitten by snake and its just a terrifying unfortunate incident," said Chris Johnson, director of Youth and Families.

Church officials said the boy's mother was talking to others while picking up her other son when the snake bite occurred.

"The paramedics were immediately called, we're very thankful everything went as quick as it could have been," said Johnson.

The boy was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital for treatment. He was later transferred to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital where he is in good condition.

Police officers killed the snake.

No other details were immediately available.
