ORLANDO, Fla. -

A Kissimmee man was arrested for battering a police officer after the officer attempted to take the man into custody for an outstanding traffic warrant.

Detrick Matthews, 30, resisted the arrest and physically struck the officer on Sunday around 6 p.m., causing serious bodily injury, according to the news release. The officer was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

An arrest warrant was obtained by the Kissimmee Police Department and Matthews was arrested on Thursday by the department's Tactical Investigative Unit. Matthews is charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and with Resisting Arrest with Violence.  According to the news release, Matthews has a long criminal history that includes violence against law enforcement officers.

Matthews was transported to the Osceola County Jail where he is being held on $11,000 bond.

“Individuals like Mr. Matthews who take aggressive actions against law enforcement officers are a serious threat to the citizens of Kissimmee and therefore become a high priority for the Kissimmee Police Department,” said Chief Lee Massie.
