A Maine man accused of shooting a Florida firefighter in the head in a drug dispute pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Wednesday, WABI-TV reports.
Daniel Porter was arraigned on a murder charge Wednesday in Waldo County Superior Court in Belfast.
Authorities allege Porter shot 31-year-old Jerry Perdomo of Orange City, Fla. in late February and dumped his body on remote family property in the town of Newburgh.
Police say Porter told them he owed Perdomo $3,000 for a drug debt.
Porter was arrested Feb. 28 at a rented house in Jackson where police say he killed Perdomo. The body was found the next day.
Porter's attorney has said his client was acting in self-defense.
The Perdomo family issued a statement before the hearing, as emailed by Perdomo's brother-in-law, Chris Lerch. The statement read:
“We as a family are still heartbroken and mourning the loss of Jerry. Words truly can’t explain the feeling of shock and disbelief that still sets in when we think about Jerry being gone. We are very proud of the man he was. He served his country, his community and dearly loved his children. He is desperately missed by all, but especially by his mother. Even though we aren’t able to be there for the arraignment, we love him, and will continue to support him in spirit. We have complete faith in our Heavenly Father and in the State Attorney that the whole truth will be revealed, and justice will be served for Jerry.”
