SANFORD, Fla. -

A Sanford police officer has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving.

Officer Stephan Santiago was stopped by the Sanford Police Department shortly after the crash, which occurred early Sunday morning.

Once it was determined that he was a Sanford Police Officer, the supervisor on duty requested that the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office take over the investigation.

Deputies summoned the Florida Highway Patrol, and troopers issued Santiago, who was off-duty, a criminal citation for leaving the scene of an accident with more than $50 in damage and a citation for careless driving.  Details about the crash were not released.

The Sanford Police Department said it will conduct an independent review after the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation is finished.
