Neighborhoods in DeBary are on alert after thieves have reportedly kicked their way into their home and robbed them.

DeBARY, Fla. -

Neighborhoods in DeBary are on alert after thieves have kicked their way into several homes.

Police say the burglars have hit five homes this week in subdivisions on Quail Down Drive, Spring Ridge Drive and Pleasant Hill Drive.

Susan Hughes, who nearly became a victim, spoke with Local 6 about two men who showed up at her door Monday afternoon.

"I still have nightmares," said Hughes.

Hughes was home alone and heard her doorbell ring. Instead of answering the door, she looked out her window and saw two men in a car in her driveway.

"The driver was the one who got to the front door," said Hughes. "He was the one who kicked the door real hard."

Hughes managed to scare them off before they could break-in by yelling at the thieves and warning she was calling 911, but others haven't been so lucky.

Since Monday, there have been five break-ins in the area all during the day. Police said the thieves have gotten away with jewelry, electronics and furniture.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office says they are putting more patrols in the neighborhoods that have been hit, but need the public's help to make an arrest.
