STUART, Fla. -

A teenage surfer posing for pictures in the waters off Central Florida was bitten by a shark.

Cole Taschman, 16, needed 12 stitches in his right hand after being bitten Sunday in the waters off Stuart.

The high school junior says he was in waist-deep water when a blacktip reef shark bit his hand.

Taschman says he hit the shark with his surfboard and then ran out of the water to get help. He says the shark was between 4 to 5 feet long.

The teen had been posing for pictures for a fundraiser for an injured friend.

According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File, Florida leads the country in shark attacks.
