Volunteers at Wickham Park in Melbourne reflected as they built the structure that lists the names of 58,227 Americans who were casualties in that war.

Volunteer and Air Force Master Sgt. Dundrae Lakes helped build the Vietnam Memorial Wall - a  three-fifth-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, Florida Today reports.

“It respects the people who wore the uniform before us and made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Lakes, who is stationed at Patrick Air Force Base.

This morning, a procession of about 1,000 motorcycles and other vehicles escorted a truck carrying the sections of the wall on 20-mile route from Brevard Community College’s Cocoa campus to Wickham Park. The procession, which took about a half-hour from the first vehicle to the last to pass, was led by a contingent of members of local law enforcement agencies on motorcycles.

The Vietnam Memorial Wall will be at the park this week for Florida’s 26th Annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion.
