SANFORD, Fla. -

Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air is undertaking a major expansion in Central Florida, adding almost a dozen new non-stop routes to and from Orlando-Sanford International.

The company began announcing the nine new cities in August. It now operates twice-weekly flights to and from Clarksburg, WV, Oklahoma City, Charlottesville, VA, Portsmouth, VA, Springfield, IL and Bismarck, ND.

Service has been announced and will begin over the next few months to St. Cloud, MN, Concord, NC and Burlington, VT.

Larry Dale, spokesman for Orlando-Sanford Airport, says the airport already contributes greatly to the Central Florida economy.

"[Orlando-Sanford International] generates $2.53 billion to the Central Florida economy annually," Dale said.

Dale says these new flights will grow tourism and give locals the chance to escape to nine new cities.

"We really like flying in and out of the smaller airports. It's so much easier," said Denise Rood.

Rood says she tries to fly out of Sanford as often as possible. She says she's more likely to keep to her routine with the new service.

"I'm looking forward to doing some more travel and the rates are so inexpensive it makes it convenient to travel more often," she said.

While Allegiant offers some cheaper fares than other airlines, keep in mind extra charges for baggage and even choosing a seat ahead of time.
