CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -

An Atlas V rocket carrying a GPS satellite for the U.S. Air Force launched from Cape Canaveral on Wednesday

The rocket launched from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It was the fifth time since December that an unmanned Atlas V rocket has been launched.

The on-board GPS is the fourth in a series of next generation satellites and will join a worldwide timing and navigation system, United Launch Alliance said.

When it becomes operational later this summer, the craft will replace a 17-year-old satellite. The older satellite will be used as a backup for the new one.
