The controversial film 'Blackfish,' which focuses on SeaWorld's capture and treatment of its killer whales, was not nominated for an Academy Award on Thursday.

Supporters of the film had hoped 'Blackfish' would earn a nomination in the "Best Documentary" category.

Prior to the nomination, a petition was created on Change.org, asking the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to withhold a nomination. The writers argued 'Blackfish' was not a documentary.

Since its release, the film has created a whirlwind of criticism for SeaWorld. In recent months, several bands have decided to back out of their scheduled performances at the Orlando park, citing concerns raised from the documentary.

Those acts include:

Willie Nelson
Barenaked Ladies
Trace Adkins
Cheap Trick
Martina McBride
38 Special
Trisha Yearwood
