PORT ORANGE, Fla. -

A body was found inside a submerged sport utility vehicle Wednesday morning in Volusia County after a passerby spotted the vehicle.

Port Orange police say Michael K. Gross, 51, of Port Orange, died in the crash, which occurred before 7:30 a.m. on South Williamson Boulevard at Anita Street near Spruce Creek in Port Orange.

The passerby called officials and law enforcement officers searched for occupants of the SUV, which was partially wedged against bridge pylons, Port Orange police said.

Three Port Orange officers, a Volusia County deputy and two Port Orange firefighters entered the water and found Gross dead in the driver's seat, police said.  An autopsy will determine his cause of death.

A tow truck removed the SUV from the water.

An investigation is ongoing.
