Controlled burn sends smoke over Brevard County

Land managers are conducting a 5,000-acre prescribed fire on Friday at the River Lakes Conservation Area, along the St. Johns River in Brevard County, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports.

The St. Johns River Water Management District ignites fires to reduce brush that can cause severe fires and to improve habitat.

Prescribed fire fosters more fire-adapted plants and animals, cycles nutrients, controls tree diseases and opens scenic vistas, a district press release said.

The Florida Highway Patrol warns motorists not to stop along the highway to take photos or video of the fire.
