VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -

A U.S. army officer returned to Volusia County after a nine-month deployment and surprised her father on a college campus.

Army Specialist Heather Holman has not seen her family in nearly a year. She showed up at Daytona State College Tuesday where her father, William Holman is studying for a second career.

William Holman 52, was expecting a surprise speaker in his Anatomy class, but instead his daughter came out of a connecting classroom.

The school's marketing director helped coordinate the surprise.

Holman is a combat medic for the army.

The 21-year-old spent her days looking after fellow soldiers and spent her nights Facebooking her father.

"It's difficult because I would send him a message and I wouldn't get a message back until I got back to work the next day, because that's the only place I had internet access," she told Local 6

William Holman is back in school at Daytona State College planning on becoming a nurse.

School has occupied his time, but his thoughts were always with his daughter even though he says he knew she was in good hands.

"The people she works with look after her and have become a family," he said.

Holman will get to spend 18 days with her family before she has to return to Ft Drum, NY.
