Local 6' Sheli Muniz reports on a deputy who shot a suspect in Kissimmee.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -

An Osceola County sheriff's deputy shot and critically injured a man who authorities say "violently attacked" the deputy during a traffic stop.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Indian Point subdivision in Kissimmee.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Michael Maccallum, 30, conducted a traffic stop at Eaglet Lane and Cheyenne Point Trail and attempted to arrest the driver on possible drug-related charges or an outstanding violation of probation warrant.

Ridge David White, 26, a registered felon and sex offender,  struck Maccallum and ran off, officials said.

Maccallum was able to catch up with White, and a physical altercation ensued, according to the Sheriff's Office, which said Maccallum then fired his weapon, injuring White.

Maccallum was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. White was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting, and Maccallum has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in shootings.

Maccallum has been a deputy since December of 2006 and assigned to the Patrol Division.
