KISSIMMEE, Fla. -

A Kissimmee mother has been charged with child neglect after police say an exterminator found her 1-year-old child alone in an apartment.

Kissimmee police said the pest control worker knocked on the door of the apartment four times before walking in to do requested maintenance. When he opened the door, he saw a small child sitting on the couch at 11:45 a.m. and contacted office staff.

Eserophe Ausa, 39, arrived minutes before authorities arrived and said she stepped out of the apartment to pick something up from someone. Upon further questioning, she told police that she went to Wal-Mart to buy groceries and left the sleeping 1-year-old on the couch.

Ausa was taken to Osceola County Jail on $1,000 bond. Her husband, who was at work at the time of the incident, took custody of the 1-year-old.

Department of Children and Families is also investigating.
