FAMU trustees debate presidential search

Florida A&M University is reopening its search for a new president, but there are questions about whether interim President Larry Robinson will be allowed to apply for the job.

FAMU halted a search for a new president last March and is just now restarting it.

But a presidential search committee Thursday debated whether Robinson should be a candidate.

Robinson agreed that he would not be a candidate when he first took over for former President James Ammons. Ammons resigned last year as part of the fallout over the 2011 hazing death of a FAMU drum major.

Tommy Mitchell, president of the FAMU National Alumni Association, said alumni want Robinson to be allowed to apply. Several search committee members, however, said it was premature to consider Robinson at this time.
