In a jailhouse interview with investigative reporter Tony Pipitone, 18-year-old Erica Pugh says she was talking with her boyfriend on her cellphone moments before he shot Orange County sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine.
Pugh said Benjamin Holtermann, the wanted felon she came to Florida with from Maryland in December, called her cell after she had abandoned the stolen car deputies say they we using to help burglarize cars.
She said Holtermann told her he was on street named, in part, "Westminster."
"He tells me he loved me. 'I see deputy coming toward me.' I'm here I love you," Pugh recalled, adding she would be detained by another deputy not long after that call disconnected.
In a wide-ranging, tearful interview at the Orange County jail, Pugh said she sped away Monday night in the stolen car from a citizen who suspected she was involved with another man, later identified as Holtermann, in car burglaries.
She dumped the car in less than one minute, as Holtermann ran away from the scene on foot, she said.
After walking in the neighborhood for what she estimated may have been nearly 20 minutes, she said she got the cell call from Holtermann just as a deputy was approaching her.
