Workers spent Friday afternoon building the new playground at the Kiddieland Academy in Groveland, which will be dedicated to Lily Quintus, whose father works nearby as a firefighter.

"I hate to call it a memorial; it's a gift of love to the Quintus family," said Dianne Garvis, who is spearheading the playground's construction.

Quintus’ father, along with other community members and donations from The Home Depot, have taken part in rebuilding the academy.

"It's not going to be a sad place, it's going to be a happy place," said Garvis. "That's what children are supposed to be. And this is a way of letting the family know that the community is heartbroken for them."

There will also be a dedication ceremony on Saturday to honor Quintus, and the ceremony will include performances by other children.

Mark Nation, attorney for the Quintus family, told Local 6 on Saturday the Quintus family has not been contacted about the playground's dedication.  He said the family and the Groveland Fire Department had nothing to do with the fundraising for the project.

He also said the Quintus family was considering dedicating their own park in Lily's honor.

Construction on the playground comes one day after troopers said the driver who crashed into the day care center had no alcohol or drugs in his system.

One of the boys who was admitted to Arnold Palmer Hospital with serious injuries was released on Wednesday.

Three-year-old June DeCaldzada is still in the Intensive Care Unit. Her mother tells Local 6 she is making progress but doctors say she will be in the hospital for at least another month.
