A human skull and bones are found in Lakeland.

LAKELAND, Fla. -

A man searching for scrap metal in a wooded area in Lakeland instead found a human skull and bones, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The discovery was made around 9 a.m. Tuesday near North Wabash Avenue between Memorial Boulevard and Crutchfield Road.

According to deputies, John Sargent, of Tampa, was looking for scrap metal when he came across a  blue plastic container containing the human remains.  Other bones were scattered in the area, deputies said.

Sargent called the Sheriff's Office and a death investigation was launched.

The bones, which appear to be that of an adult, will be taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for examination in an effort to identify the deceased person and determine the cause of death.
