Monitoring your child's activity on Instagram can be easy. Many parents suggest logging into your child's Instagram account on your own personal phone in an effort to keep a close eye on it.

It is important to understand that enabling "push notifications", those pop up messages alerting you to activity, does not guarantee that you will be notified of every instance on the Instagram application. It is important to understand how the application works and how to use it if you want to be up to speed on what your child is doing.

Using the Instagram app on an iPhone:

The "News" section allows you to view Instagram's recent activity. Here you will see who has requested to follow, who has been followed, any comments, likes, etc that have been made on photos.

To access "News" follow these steps:

  • Open Instagram from your iPhone home screen
  • Select the button with the heart inside the chat bubble (one button from the right)
  • Be sure that "news" is selected at the top
  • You can use the refresh button at the top right to be sure you are seeing latest activity.

When you make your Instagram profile private this means only those you have given permission can follow the account. Any photos posted are only accessible by approved followers.

To make an Instagram profile private follow these steps:

  • Select the profile button on the bottom at the far right
  • Select "Edit Your Profile" at the top
  • Once here, you will see the button next to "Photos are Private" toggle ON to make the account Private
  • Be sure to select “Done” at the top right

Restrictions on the iPhone:
The Apple App Store has always included age rating tags on all applications.

Recently, the age ratings were moved to a more prominent location that effectively makes the age rating one of the first things users see when downloading or previewing an application.

Ratings are based on the application's content and determine the age group for which the application is appropriate.

The following are the ratings Apple has detailed:

  • 4+ Contains no objectionable material
  • 9+ May contain mild or infrequent occurrences of cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence, and mild or infrequent mature, suggestive, or horror-themed content which may not be suitable for children under the age of 9.
  • 12+ May contain frequent or intense cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence, mild or infrequent mature or suggestive themes, mild or infrequent bad language, and simulated gambling which may not be suitable for children under the age of 12.
  • 17+ May contain frequent and intense realistic violence, unrestricted internet access, frequent and intense mature, horror, and suggestive themes; also strong sexual content, nudity, strong language, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs which may not be suitable for children under the age of 17. Whenever an app of this rating is requested for download, a message will appear, verifying if a user is 17 or older, and asking to confirm the purchase for this reason.

The iPhone allows blocking of objectionable apps in the iPhone's settings.

To Block Objectionable Apps follow these steps:

  • Select "Settings" from your iPhone home screen
  • Select "General"
  • Scroll down and select "Restrictions"
  • Select "Enable Restrictions"
  • You will be asked to enter a Restrictions passcode - this code is what you will use to change the restrictions settings.
  • Here you are able to add Restrictions to just about anything on the iPhone.
  • For apps, scroll down to "Allowed Content"
  • Select "Apps"
  • Here you can select which Apps are blocked or not blocked.
  • The ratings with check marks next to them are NOT blocked.

You do not need to select a save or submit button, simply push the Home button to exit Settings.
