John Morgan has not 'gone sour' on Democratic Party, Sen. Linda Stewart says

Veteran Democrat: It's the process, not the party

State Sen. Linda Stewart, a longtime Florida Democrat, told News 6 she was “very surprised” that attorney John Morgan not only dropped his bid for a possible run at the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial ticket, but also confirmed he no longer considered himself a Democrat, but instead is an independent.

“I don’t think he’s soured on the party,” Stewart told News 6 on Monday. “I think he’s more concerned about the process and how that impacts candidates he wants to support in the future.”

Morgan posted a Thanksgiving bombshell on Facebook, essentially voicing frustration with the party for which he’s collected millions through glitzy fundraisers at his Central Florida home.

It is not clear what prompted his sudden distaste for the Democrats or his potential opponents including Gwen Graham, daughter of former Florida Gov. Bob Graham.

Morgan suggested his longtime friend, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, as a possible gubernatorial candidate, not the four announced candidates.

Nelson’s office did not reply to News 6's request for a comment. Most insiders feel it’s highly unlikely he would run for governor.

Stewart posted a response on social media when Morgan’s announcement first hit.

“I don’t get this idea from John Morgan, but it’s his decision,” she wrote.

Morgan replied: “Linda when you have a party label members of the other party are automatically against you, your words are blocked out. They vote in lockstep, even if it is against their own best interests. Being Independent removes the label and allows for dialogue.”

Morgan declined WKMG’s request on Monday for an interview to clarify his concerns and intentions. He did leave the door open for a run as an Independent.

As for the fundraisers that have filled Democratic Party war chests for years, Stewart is convinced
Morgan will now spread the wealth.

“He likes Bill Nelson. He supports Bill Nelson. Bill Nelson is a Democrat," Stewart said. “So he’s (Morgan) not going to give up on Democrats at all, but he may also hold fundraisers for Republicans.”
