The photo is making the rounds on social media. It was reportedly snapped by Jeffrey King, the father of University High School band member Alison King, Friday night, showing the moment a lightning bolt strikes a tree.
"It was bright and loud and then the sound came and you just knew it was thunder because everyone was screaming," said Jean-Paul Llarch.
Llarch is a member of the band and was on the field performing a half-time show when the lightning struck. He says the weather was actually very pleasant and dry Friday night.
Radar data from around 8:40 p.m. shows storms quickly popped up in eastern Orange County.
16-year-old Shelby Botek was in the stands and said she's never seen anything like it.
"When the lightning hit, it turned really, really orange and looked like it was on fire for a few seconds and then it just all went away," she said. "I don't want to do that again, that's for sure. I don't want to do that."
Students tell Local 6 it was not raining when the lightning struck. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles ahead of the storm.
After Friday's lightning strike, the game was called in favor of University.
