LONGWOOD, Fla. -

The Longwood City Commission voted 5-0 to approve a motion that may add an opening invocation or prayer to their commission agenda.

An opening "prayer" at a local government meeting was held constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling issued May 5 in the Town of Greece v. Galloway decision.

In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court determined that public piety does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution subject to certain constraints, according to the city.

Mayor Bob Cortes said the motion was approved by the commission on a 5-0 vote to bring back a change via resolution at the July 21 meeting.
