Man accused of killing aunt, injuring father found dead, deputies say

Pedro Vega Jr. was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – The man accused of killing his aunt and stabbing his father 23 times at a home near Davenport last week was found hanged in his cell, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said Pedro Vega Jr. was found in his cell hanging from a sheet at 6:09 p.m. after a routine inmate check.

Officials said they tried to revive Vega and he was transported to Florida Hospital in Sebring, where he was declared dead.

"Pedro Vega had a history of escape and escape attempts - in fact he tried to escape custody when he was in the hospital last week. He appears to not to have wanted to spend the rest of his life in prison for his many heinous crimes, including murder. He was a very violent man, on a mission to escape, and ultimately, he did," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.
