MOUNT DORA, Fla. -

A Mount Dora police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call Tuesday night between a man and woman was hit by a car after getting into an altercation with the man.

According to officials, the officer, whose name has not been released, tried to break up the fight between the woman and Robert Whiley, 49, when Whiley became aggressive.

The 30-year-old officer attempted to shock Whiley with a stun gun, but the device malfunctioned and further agitated Whiley, officials said.

Whiley's accused of punching the officer in the head, causing him to fall into the street and get hit by a vehicle.

The officer was able to get back up and arrest Whiley.

The officer was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer will not be charged, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
