Man arrested in hit-and-run crash that killed bicyclist, police say

Surveillance cameras helped authorities identify suspect

Michael Sollberger

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash thanks in part to surveillance cameras in the area that helped authorities identify the suspect, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Police said Michael Sollberger was driving on Nova Road on Sept. 28 when he struck bicyclist Bruce
Stanley Wilson while he was in the middle lane. Sollberger fled the scene of the crash and it was a passerby who discovered 61-year-old Wilson dead in the road, according to a news release.

There were no witnesses to the crash, but police said surveillance cameras in the area captured images of a white vehicle with a black stripe. Police said they publicized those images and received a tip that the vehicle possibly belonged to Sollberger.

Authorities also said they received a tip that Sollberger's mother was making Facebook posts about the crash, urging her son to "do the right thing."

When police executed a search warrant on Sollberger's vehicle, they found it had damage consistent with striking Wilson's bicycle, according to the affidavit.

Sollberger confessed to the incident, saying that he did a Google search the morning after and learned that Wilson, who was just minutes away from his home, had died, the report said.

He was arrested Tuesday on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with death and driving without a license.
