Dickale Cothrell, 28, had nothing to say to Local 6's cameras as he was taken to jail Friday.
Deputies say he was the one responsible for shooting his 15-year-old nephew Onardo Bent last Saturday.
“He came out and he was handling the the firearm. The teen was in the house in the living room area when a round went off, he was struck and immediately went down,” said Captain Angelo Nieves of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Cothrell accidentally fired the shot, which hit his nephew in the stomach, leaving the boy in critical condition.
Cothrell and the teen initially told deputies that he was shot while riding his bike to his uncle's house. But deputies re-interviewed the teen Thursday after being alerted by family members.
That's when the teen admitted to lying to protect his uncle.
“He lied about it or was scared to tell the truth because his uncle is also on probation,” said Nieves.
Local 6 was at Cothrell's home on Leprechaun Drive as investigators gathered new evidence on Friday.
Just days ago, Cothrell stood among other family members pleading for the community's help to find the teen's shooter.
“Anyone that knows anything about this incident, please come forward and say something,” the teen's sister Odeika Bent pleaded.
No one at Cothrell's home had anything to say when Local 6 knocked on the door. Meanwhile, deputies say they're grateful to the family members that did come forward.
“We had a tragedy that occurred on that day and now we have the individual responsible in custody.”
Deputies say the teen is still in the hospital, but should recover from his injuries.
They also say they're still trying to find the gun used in the incident.
Deputies told Local 6 that Cothrell and possibly others will face more charges after lying to investigators.
