A Nebraska man is suing Wal-Mart, claiming a plastic bag from the retail giant caused his wife's death.

According to the lawsuit, the plastic bag was too full and broke while William Freis and his wife, Lynette, were walking to their car outside a Wal-Mart store in Bellevue in April 2010.

The contents inside landed on Lynette's feet, breaking and cutting her big toe.

The cut became infected and "despite multiple rounds of antibiotics and two surgical procedures," the infection spread and she died in the hospital, the Journal Star reported.

The lawsuit claims Wal-Mart did not effectively train its employees how to properly fill bags.

The bag's manufacturer, Hilex Poly Co. is also a defendant in the suit.

Wal-Mart spokesman Randy Hargrove declined to comment on the litigation. But he extended condolences to the Freis family and told The Associated Press, "customer safety is a top priority, and we take it seriously any time an injury is reported in one of our stores."
