Man drowns in rough surf off Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach police said a man who was found floating in the surf Saturday died at the hospital.

COCOA BEACH, Fla. -

Cocoa Beach police said a man was found floating in the surf Saturday morning, unconscious.

Police said the 51-year-old man, later identified as Michael Markwell of Tennessee, was found floating in the surf around 10:26 a.m. at the beach end of Young Avenue.

Police said they, along with Cocoa Beach Fire Rescue responded and performed CPR on Markwell.

Police said Markwell was taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the death was not suspicious.

Beach Patrol officials are warning swimmers about the rough surf and rip current conditions because of recent storms.
