ORLANDO, Fla. -

A man fleeing a traffic stop in Orlando tried to shoot a police officer but his gun malfunctioned, according to authorities.

Akil Asim Horsford, 23, of the Virgin Islands, was arrested on multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement official.

The incident began late Wednesday night when two Orlando police officers pulled a car over for a taillight violation and making an illegal U-turn.  The officers said they could smell marijuana coming from the car and the driver, identified as Horsford, became argumentative.

As Horsford was being removed from his car, he ran away and one of the officers shot him with a Taser but it didn't shock him, police said.

A chase ensued and one of the officers caught Horsford and they fell to the ground, according to police, who said that Horsford then pulled out a gun, pointed it at the officer and pulled the trigger but it malfunctioned.

The officer then shocked Horsford with a stun gun and tried to take his gun, police said.  Horsford then bit the officer as he was reaching for his own gun, police said.

Horsford then broke free and ran off but the other officer tackled him and again shocked him with a stun gun, police said.

Horsford continued to resist arrest and eventually was placed in handcuffs, police said.

Horsford's gun, a Sig Sauer, was taken into evidence and he was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder on a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of battery of a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm in a commission of a felony, possession of a concealed firearm, two counts of resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and two counts of resisting a law enforcement officer with violence.

The officers were not seriously injured.
