COCOA, Fla. -

A teen was shot and killed inside a Cocoa home when an AR-15 discharged while a man was making repairs to the gun, according to deputies.

Reginald Von Wright Jr., 18, died at Holmes Regional Hospital after being shot around 4:15 p.m. at a home in the 3700 block of Brophy Avenue.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Wright sat on a couch in the living room across from 25-year-old Steven Donte Speed, who was working on the AR-15, commonly referred to as an assault rifle.

As Speed continued handling the weapon, it discharged once, with the bullet striking the victim in the chest, deputies said.  Speed immediately called out to others in the home to call 911, deputies said.

An autopsy will be conducted, and once completed, the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the state attorney’s office to determine if any charges will be filed.

No other details were released.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
